Emergency Severe Weather Shelter Information
In response to severe weather and potential flooding, temporary emergency shelters will open throughout the year to provide protection for individuals experiencing homelessness. These shelters are a collaboration between the County of Santa Cruz, the City of Santa Cruz, and the City of Watsonville, and their activation will depend on weather conditions and shelter availability.
Shelter Locations:
When severe weather shelters are activated, individuals can seek refuge at the following locations:
- Santa Cruz Veterans Hall: 846 Front Street, Santa Cruz
- Watsonville Veterans Hall: 215 East Beach Street, Watsonville
Shelter Operations:
- Managed by: People First of Santa Cruz County
- Capacity: Limited, with beds available on a first-come, first-served basis
- Priority: Individuals with disabilities or those facing significant health or safety risks sleeping outdoors will receive priority placement.
What to Expect at the Shelter:
- Amenities: Cots, blankets, and ready-to-eat meals will be provided.
- Pets: Pets are welcome if they are leashed and under voice control. Aggressive animals will not be allowed.
- Food: Meals will be served once intake and bed assignments are completed.
- Storage: Personal belongings must fit in small storage areas provided near each bed.
Please note that shelter capacity is limited, and space will be filled quickly, so we encourage you to arrive an hour before the shelter opens.
